Professor Dr AP Kater is a clinical hematologist focused on lymphatic cancer (lymphoma), particularly chronic lymphatic leukemia (CLL). Together with his colleague at the Academic Medical Center, University of Amsterdam (AMC-UvA) Professor Eric Eldering, Professor Kater is leading a research group working towards a better understanding of the cellular and molecular processes underlying the emergence and clinical behavior of these illnesses.

Professor Kater was trained as an internist (hematologist) at the AMC-UvA. In 2006 he obtained his doctorate in research into cell death regulation in CLL cells. From 2008 to 2009 he worked at the Moores Cancer Center and the Laboratory of Gene Regulation and Signal Transduction at the University of California (San Diego, USA). Professor Kater is one of the founders of the Lymphoma and Myeloma Center Amsterdam (LYMMCARE). He is Deputy Head of the Department of Hematology, Vice-Dean of the Hematology specialty program and Chairman of the clinical research committee at the Amsterdam University Medical Center.

Since September 2014, Professor Kater has been chair of the Dutch CLL working group at the Hemato-Oncology Foundation for Adults in the Netherlands (HOVON) and since 2020 has been a member of the HOVON executive board and chairman of the EHA Scientific Working Group on CLL. He is on the editorial board of the journals Blood and Haematologica. Also, he is member of the scientific committee of the European School of Haematology. He is highly active for the Dutch CLL patient advocacy foundation, giving lectures for patients and family, both at meetings and online.
